Reflecting on session 6 of our Reflective Practice Group: Includes feedback from some of the participants and plans for the future.

Image
The main theme of this, our last, Reflective Practice session in this group of 6, centred on what we can accomplish with a ‘can do’ mind-set and some useful ideas and strategies to help us remind ourselves of our goals in life and work.   The importance of self-care is clear: how can we bring playfulness into our lives in order to keep healthy and happy . We would like to share some of the images and feedback participants gave us to share.   From Sophia Dalley : ‘From our reflective practice session in March I am taking with me the image of two ladders , the one with small attainable steps being my preferred ladder . For me it is useful to know the long term goal but less daunting to focus only on the next step and the one I am currently balanced on .’       Image created by Netty   ‘I also love being in act II!’ Excerpt from Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach ‘Act One just sets the scene – who our heroine is ( ourselves) , where she came from, the for

Reflecting on Reflective Practice: Week 5 and Tool Boxes

Image
"Tool Boxes" (Image from 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse" by Charlie Mackesy - coloured by Marta) Marta reflects This week's discussions revolved around the theme “Tool Boxes”. This metaphor offers a great opportunity to think about our skills and know-how and lends itself to wonderful parallels to reflect about. Is it about the number of tools contained in it?                Or is it about how well can you use them?                                         Do you carry multipurpose tools?                          Are you particularly skilful at using a tool in particular?                                    Can you find the tool needed for the job in time? Do you replace and discard old useless ones?... And yet, it isn’t just about the tool itself, is it?... Is the wood too hard? That metal might easily scratch Is it the right time of year? Has the screw lost its head? A tool box is as good or as bad a the person that handles it. The more we think a

Reflections on Weeks 2 and 4 - Overlapping Themes

Reflective Practice gives us a space to grapple with the needs of the self and how to put that at the top of our to-do lists.    No topic is off limits, here is some more we explored this week: Thinking about professionalism  Balancing who we are with what others expect us to be.  What happens when we do not look like our qualifications but like human beings with real thoughts and feelings?  Do we have to put on an ‘outfit’ or can we be a wonderful messy mix of good ideas and knowledge wrapped up in a colourful outfit rather than a suit and boots? Prioritising our own needs is a part of being a professional. Sometimes work has to come second because otherwise we wind up with burnout and an inability to care for anyone or anything.    Getting used to giving to the other without self-care its the straightest road to burnout. It is a good thing to be resilient but the other side of that is avoidance, avoiding feeling our own feelings or listening to ourselves and our body and mind’s

Reflecting on Reflective Practice Week 3

Image
A quote was shared this week - and though we do not know who might have originally said it - it felt very relevant for these strange times we find ourselves in: 'Don't worry, we will just rise to the challenge' Much of our reflective practice focused on the joys and challenges of doing work online. We are sure that many of you can relate to that!  We will not be sharing details of what was discussed in the group rather our own further reflections . Netty reflects...   Our group today made me think a lot about how many changes I have had to make in the way I work and some of the considerations I have had to take into account both professionally and personally, so I thought perhaps I would reflect on some of that here.  1. I can see my face as well as the full face of the person I am talking to: Working hard so that I am not staring at the other person or the image of myself! 2. The space I work online is work space anyway, but I find i am much more aware of the fact that I am

Reflecting on Reflective Practice Group Week 1

Image
Reflecting on Reflective Practice Group Week 1 It is difficult to define what these reflective practice groups are; they are more than chatting but they differ from: Supervision   because the focus is on ourselves and our practice rather than the client. Group Therapy   in that there are no specific therapeutic goals to be achieved. Personal or Professional Development i n that there’s no set of outcomes to be achieved. These practice-focused conversations are a space created to support our practice from a nurturing, empowering and shared experience. There comes forth a focus on the practitioner’s perspective, a sense of looking after one’s work by looking after ones-self within each of the roles we hold in our personal and professional life. We, Marta and Netty, both love learning, hearing other perspectives, fresh, as they are, not trying to accommodate to a pre-existing format. With mutual respect, care and attention our individual expressions offer a contribution to each for g
